Are Video Doorbells Worth It? An Honest Look

Video doorbells went from novelty to default in just a few years. For most homes they're genuinely useful — but they're not a complete security system, and it helps to know what they do and don't do well.

What they're great at

• Catching package deliveries and porch activity.
• Making your entry an obvious "monitored" zone.

Their limits

A doorbell camera only sees the door. It won't cover your driveway, side gate, or backyard, and a narrow field of view can miss what's happening just off the step. They're a great first camera, not your only one.

Getting the most from one

Mount it at the right height, make sure it has solid power and Wi-Fi, and pair it with at least one wider camera covering the approach. That combination catches both the visitor and the context.
