Leaving Town This Summer? A Home Security Checklist Before You Go

Summer is peak travel season in Los Angeles - and it is also when a lot of homes sit empty for a week or two at a time. Burglars know the pattern: piled-up mail, dark windows night after night, and a driveway that never changes. The good news is that a quiet hour of prep before you leave does most of the work. Here is the checklist we walk LA homeowners through before a trip.

The 10-minute pre-trip checklist

Make the house look lived-in

An empty-looking home is the target; a lived-in one usually gets skipped. You do not need much: a few lights on smart plugs or timers set to come on in the evening, a radio or TV on a timer, and a car left in the driveway all signal that someone is home. If you have smart bulbs, vary the schedule slightly day to day so it does not look robotic.

Set your cameras up for being away

While you are home, you glance at your cameras casually. While you are away, they need to come to you. Before you leave, turn on push notifications for person and package detection, and double-check that night-vision is working on your outdoor cameras - most issues happen after dark. Confirm remote viewing works on cellular data, not just your home WiFi, so you can actually pull up the feed from the airport or a hotel.

If you are leaving a second home or a property that sits empty for longer stretches, our deeper guide on protecting a vacation home or empty property covers longer-term setups like check-in schedules and water/temperature sensors.

Handle deliveries and mail

Nothing announces "nobody is home" like a stack of boxes on the porch. Put a hold on USPS mail, pause recurring deliveries, and reroute anything important to a locker or a neighbor. If packages will still arrive, a doorbell camera plus a trusted neighbor is your best combo - and our porch-pirate guide has more on cutting theft.

If something happens while you are gone

Decide ahead of time who responds. Give one nearby person live camera access and a key, and keep our number handy. With clear footage and someone local who can check the property, a problem that could have ruined your trip becomes a quick phone call instead.

Heading out soon and not sure your system is travel-ready? We will check your cameras, alerts, and remote viewing - or add coverage where you need it - before you go. Serving homes across Greater Los Angeles.
