What Internet Speed Do You Need for Security Cameras?

"Will my internet handle this?" is one of the most common questions we get, especially from homeowners adding cameras to an older connection. The short answer: most LA homes are fine — but there's one number that matters more than the one your provider advertises. Here's what you actually need.

Upload is the number that counts

Internet plans are sold on download speed, but cameras spend their day uploading — pushing video to the cloud and to your phone. Upload is almost always the smaller, weaker number on a home plan, and it's the bottleneck for cameras. If you remember one thing: check your upload speed, not download.

Rough numbers

• A single HD camera streaming to the cloud uses roughly 1–2 Mbps of upload.
• A 4K camera can use 4–8 Mbps or more while it's actively recording motion.
• A typical home system of four to six cameras wants around 10–20 Mbps of upload headroom to stay smooth.

Most modern plans clear that easily, but older DSL and some budget plans have tiny upload ceilings — that's where people run into trouble.

Signs your connection is the bottleneck

Choppy or buffering live view, long delays loading feeds, cameras that keep dropping offline, and clips that skip frames all point to a connection that's maxed out — especially when several cameras trigger at once.

How to get smooth footage without a bigger plan

• Record locally. A system that saves to an on-site recorder barely touches your internet — you only use bandwidth when you check in remotely. That's a big reason to weigh local vs. cloud storage.
• Hardwire what you can. Wired cameras are steadier than Wi-Fi and don't fight the rest of your network — see wired vs. wireless.
• Right-size resolution. Not every camera needs to stream 4K to the cloud around the clock.
