Indoor vs. Outdoor Security Cameras: What Goes Where

Indoor and outdoor cameras look similar but are built for different jobs. Putting the wrong one in the wrong place leads to early failures and poor footage.

Outdoor cameras

These are weather-sealed and built to handle sun, heat, and the elements. Use them for entries, driveways, yards, and any exterior approach. In LA, look for units rated for heat and, near the coast, corrosion resistance.

Indoor cameras

Smaller and more discreet, indoor cameras cover entry hallways, main living areas, and businesses' interiors. They're not built to survive outside.

Where people get it wrong

• Using an indoor camera under an eave "that stays dry" — until it doesn't.
• Forgetting the garage interior, a common entry point.
• Pointing an indoor camera through a window (glare and reflections ruin night footage).
