Will Your Security Cameras Keep Recording During a Power Outage?

Every LA summer brings the same thing: a heat wave, a spike in AC use, and rolling or unexpected power outages. It is exactly when you most want your cameras working - and exactly when many of them quietly shut off. So what actually happens to your security system when the power drops, and how do you make sure you do not lose the footage that matters?

The short answer: it depends on your setup

No camera system records through an outage on its own. Cameras, recorders, and your internet all run on power. Whether you keep recording comes down to one question: what is still getting power when the grid goes down? With the right backup, your system rides through a typical LA outage without missing a frame. Without it, everything goes dark the moment the lights do.

Wired DVR and NVR systems

A hardwired system - cameras feeding a DVR or NVR - is actually the easiest to protect, because everything plugs into a small number of outlets. Put the recorder and the camera power supply (and, for IP cameras, the PoE switch) on a single battery backup, and the whole system keeps running. Footage keeps saving to the local drive even if your internet is down, which is one reason we like local recording for outage resilience.

WiFi and battery cameras

Battery-powered cameras keep their own charge, so the camera itself may stay on for a while - but they almost always rely on your home WiFi to record to the cloud and to send alerts. If your router loses power, the camera has nowhere to send footage and no way to notify you. Plug-in WiFi cameras simply turn off. How to keep recording when the power is out

• Add a UPS (battery backup). A consumer uninterruptible power supply runs a typical recorder and cameras for a couple of hours - enough for most LA outages. Size it to your equipment's wattage with margin to spare.
• Back up the internet too. Put your modem and router on the same UPS, or recording continues locally but remote viewing and alerts stop.
• Confirm auto-restart. Good systems power back on and resume recording by themselves. We always verify this so you are not left with a recorder that needs a manual reboot.
• For longer outages, larger battery stations or a generator circuit can keep critical cameras up for much longer at a business or larger property.

Do not forget your footage
