What to Do After a Break-In (and How Footage Helps)

A break-in is stressful, and it's easy to make mistakes in the moment. Having a plan helps you stay safe, support an investigation, and prevent a repeat.

In the moment

• If you suspect someone is still inside, don't go in — call the police from a safe place.
• Once it's clear, avoid touching anything until police have looked.
• Document damage and missing items with photos.

Preserve your footage

This is where cameras earn their keep. Save and download the relevant clips immediately so they don't get overwritten, and give copies to police. Footage of faces, vehicles, and direction of travel is genuinely useful for investigations and insurance.

Prevent the next one

Burglars sometimes return to homes they've hit. Review where they got in, close that gap, and consider added coverage and lighting on the weak point.
